How China is Helping the World Battle Covid2019

Through tough but effective measures, China has been able to wrestle control of the novel coronavirus, Covid-19, within its borders. Now the country is moving swiftly to combat new cases from Chinese expatriates returning home, while also looking abroad to share their hard-won knowledge with countries around the world struggling to contain their own outbreaks.

As of March 23, the number of deaths in Italy from coronavirus continue to pile up, nearing 5,500, far higher than China’s 3,245. Short on vital supplies like masks and ventilators, Italy appealed to its European neighbors for support, through the European Union’s Civil Protection Mechanism, but not a single member country came to their aid.

Although China is still reeling from its own battle, Beijing moved swiftly, donating 30 tons of supplies, which were airlifted into the country. The first shipment, full of test kits and protective clothing, was received on March 12, and was followed by a second shipment on March 18, of goods donated by various Chinese provinces and companies. China is sharing its knowledge as well.

Chinese doctors and scientists have been holding video conferences with their overseas counterparts in Europe, Africa, and other Asian countries, with information about best practices for containment and treatment. What’s more, Beijing dispatched a group of 300 Chinese intensive care doctors to Italy, to support Italy’s battle with the disease.

In addition to medical supplies and knowledge-sharing, China said they will donate 20 million USD to the World Health Organization, who is spearheading the global fight to eradicate Covid-19.

Even Chinese billionaire Jack Ma has stepped in to aid African countries, as they prepare to face what could be an onslaught of coronavirus cases in the coming weeks. Ma sent a cargo flight carrying 5.4 million face masks, more than one million testing kits, among other medical equipment, to Ethiopia on March 22. Experts warn Africa’s health systems may be overwhelmed by the outbreak, making the donated goods especially precious.

From Milan to Addis Ababa, China’s generosity has been praised the world over, as the country proves much-needed assistance to the global community during this frightening pandemic.
