WPA Sec-Gen calls on US, China Leaders to Improve Bilateral Relations

Amidst deteriorating U.S.-China relations, World Peace Association Secretary-General Sattva Zhang urges leaders in both China and the United States to improve bilateral ties.

If U.S.-China relations deteriorate further, Ms. Zhang fears it will cause greater instability to the world, in an already uncertain time. As the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread in Africa, the Middle East, and South America, millions of people around the globe have become sick, while others struggle with the economic fallout of stay-at-home orders.

The U.S. and China are two of the biggest economies in the world, and their friendly relations are vital to the health of the world economy. International organizations like the World Health Organization also require their support, to help fight the epidemic. But some have wrongly placed politics of the WHO, placing this vital NGO in the middle of an uncalled for fight between China and the U.S.

It therefore goes without saying that any major disruptions between China and the U.S., such as fresh tariffs or a continued trade-war, will further exacerbate the pain everyday people are feeling across the world.

Some politicians are working to disrupt U.S.-China ties for their own domestic political gain, points out Ms. Zhang. This is reprehensible. We need leaders to be more diplomatic and generous than ever, she says.

The World Peace Association hopes that Chinese and American leaders will remain calm, levelheaded, and restrained, putting aside any ulterior motives. A new cold war must be avoided at all costs. The world is already overwhelmed by the epidemic, says Ms. Zhang. It is reckless to needlessly undermine the world economy at this critical time.

It is the sincerest wish of the World Peace Association that all countries in the world can get along with each other, help each other, and overcome difficulties together. Together, we can ensure the safety, healthy, and prosperity of the world, says Ms. Zhang.
